It consists of coating the enamel with a fluoride varnish (varnishing) or applying a fluoride foam (contact fluoridation). The main purpose of fluoridation is to strengthen the enamel and increase its resistance to acids and bacteria. Thanks to this we are able to reduce the risk of caries by as much as 40%.
The fluoridation procedure is completely painless and does not cause discoloration of the teeth. It should be performed twice a year, and in children even more often, every 3-4 months.
Fluoridation is particularly important in several cases:
- High risk of tooth decay, especially in children
- Wearing orthodontic braces
- Exposed tooth necks and sensitivity
- After scaling and sanding
- Dryness in the mouth
- After radiation treatments to the head or neck
